At the age of 14, I got my first set of weights. They were the old fashion ones, grey plastic exterior filled with sand. Someof you may have remembered those. I would hang out in the basement with some of my friends working out and "teaching them how to exercise" as if I new. When I was old enough I got a membership at a gym. I then recruited friends, family, and anyone who would come with me. I was "the leader" of course. I would schedule the days that we would all go and the excercises that were to be done. As the years went by little has changed. I loved to write exercises for my friends and show them how to properly do them. They would ask me questions and for advise and I would give it to them, right or wrong, but I would give them advise.
After my teenage years into my adult years, I have gone through a few career adventures. Nothing really called out to me until one day out of the blue I thought "why not go to school and learn to be a personal trainer." It was ON!!! Nothing was going to stop me now. I was so excited that I started researching schools and certification programs until I found a hands on personal training school in Waltham caled NPTI (National Personal Training Institute. I enrolled in April....and graduated the following February. From there I worked at a few different health clubs until I landed a great opportunity at a Gold's Gym in Marlborough, MA where I have been for about 2 years.
Since then, I have been certified by NSCA (National Strength and Conditioning Association). To me, being a personal trainer is more than exercises and making people do horrible things. It's about coaching a person on how to change their lives through exercise and a healthy lifestyle. It's about teaching someone to set a goal and how to achieve it, one small step at a time, to create a plan and execute it. Achieving our goals requires discipline, determination and holding ourselves accountable. That is what I expect from my clients. In return, my clients expect the proper coaching direction, encouragement and honesty. There is no better feeling than seeing somebody making a huge change in their life and knowing that I had something to do with it. It literally brings tears to my eyes everytime.
